Restaurant receipts value slips 0.3% in Q3
Chinese restaurants saw the sharpest drop, with receipts down 3.5%.
The total value of restaurant receipts slipped by 0.3% in the third quarter of 2025 (Q3 2025) from a year earlier.
A government spokesman attributed September’s decline partly to a high comparison base, as last year’s Mid-Autumn Festival took place in mid-September, whilst this year’s fell in early October, and to more frequent extreme weather that month.
According to the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), restaurant purchases fell by 1% to $8.6b over the same period. After adjusting for inflation, the volume of restaurant receipts was down 1.4% year on year (YoY).
By restaurant type, Chinese restaurants saw the sharpest drop, with receipts down 3.5% in value and 4.8% in volume.
Non-Chinese restaurants rose 3.7% in value and 3.2% in volume.
Fast food outlets recorded a small 0.3% increase in value but a 1% drop in volume.
Bar receipts were up 2.4% in value and 1% in volume, whilst miscellaneous eateries posted declines of 4% and 5.6%, respectively.
Seasonally adjusted figures show total restaurant receipts fell 0.8% in value and 1.7% in volume from the previous quarter.
For the first three quarters of 2025, restaurant receipts were largely flat in value but down 1.2% in volume compared with the same period last year.
