Towngas pilots hydrogen-powered EV charging at North Point HQ
The project uses green hydrogen from Tseung Kwan O landfill for zero-carbon power.
The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) has launched Hong Kong’s first hydrogen-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging system for a commercial building at its North Point headquarters.
The system uses hydrogen power generation to supply additional electricity and allows users to deploy green hydrogen-powered charging systems.
Don Cheng Hill-kwong, Towngas Chief Operating Officer – Hong Kong Business, said the model allows commercial buildings to deploy EV charging systems without extensive electrical upgrades, addressing site constraints.
“More importantly, this hydrogen solution can utilise green hydrogen generated from the Tseung Kwan O landfill to achieve a zero-carbon power supply,” he said.
The project, in partnership with CIMC Enric, adopts a bottled-hydrogen supply model using locally produced hydrogen.
Hydrogen is stored in cylinders, transported to the site, and connected to power generation equipment supplying electricity to three EV chargers.
Each kilogram of hydrogen can generate around 15 kWh of electricity, with system capacity scalable based on demand, according to the company.
“Hong Kong’s first project to convert landfill gas into green hydrogen is set to commence this year, bringing the city one step closer to local green hydrogen application,” Don Cheng added.
