
Gov’t, Ministry of Water Resources sign water cooperation agreement
It will focus on improving protection of the Pearl River Estuary.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government and the Ministry of Water Resources have signed a cooperation agreement to enhance the management of water-related affairs.
The agreement was witnessed by Chief Executive John Lee and Water Resources Minister Li Guoying. The signing was carried out by Bernadette Linn, the secretary for development, and Tang Liang, director-general of the Ministry’s General Office.
The agreement focuses on improving governance and protection of the Pearl River Estuary and rivers along the Guangdong-Hong Kong boundary, whilst also promoting collaboration in disaster prevention, water supply safety, major project planning, information sharing, talent development, and hydraulic technology.
Lee expressed gratitude to the ministry for its continuous support of Hong Kong’s water supply and flood prevention efforts. He noted that the signing coincides with the 60th anniversary of Dongjiang water supply to Hong Kong, emphasizing the importance of the arrangement in strengthening cooperation within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The chief executive also reaffirmed the HKSAR Government’s commitment to water conservation and efficient use, ensuring water supply safety and flood control for the region’s high-quality development.
Meanwhile, Li highlighted that the agreement marks a new milestone in water affairs cooperation between Hong Kong and the Mainland, pledging continued efforts to strengthen water safety and support the Greater Bay Area’s development.
