Poultry eggs from Taiwan's Hualien banned

Amidst H5N2 and H5N3 avian influenza scare.

In a report, the Centre for Food Safety announced today that an import ban on poultry eggs from Taiwan's Hualien County has come into effect.

The World Organisation for Animal Health notifed the centre that there have been outbreaks of low pathogenic H5N2 and H5N3 avian influenza detected on poultry farms there.

Poultry egg imports from Taiwan's Penghu County have been banned since November 23.

Hong Kong imports a small amount of poultry eggs from Taiwan, but no live poultry or poultry meat. From January to May, about 1.6 million poultry eggs have been imported into Hong Kong from Taiwan.

The centre will monitor information issued on the bird flu outbreak and the latest situation in Taiwan.
