HK launches subsidy scheme to expand 5G in rural areas

About 50 new subsidised RBSs will be built.

The Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) has launched a subsidy scheme to help mobile network operators (MNOs) install 5G radio base stations (RBSs) in country parks, outlying islands, and other rural and remote areas.

Under the scheme, about 50 new subsidised RBSs will be built to improve mobile coverage and capacity. OFCA expects mobile coverage in country parks to reach at least 90%, and coverage along major hiking trails to hit 98% or more.

The scheme will also benefit around 70 villages near the planned RBS sites, providing better mobile services for residents and visitors and supporting smart tourism development.

Licensed MNOs are now invited to apply.
