Hong Kong’s second quarter port cargo throughput up 9%

The port of Hong Kong handled 6.4mn container units during the same period.

The Census & Statistics Department said on Tuesday total port cargo throughput in the second quarter rose 9% over a year earlier to 73.4 million tonnes. Within this total, inward and outward port cargo rose 8% and 11% to 42.5 million tonnes and 30.9 million tonnes.

For the first half of the year, total port cargo throughput increased 5% over a year earlier to 136.1 million tonnes. Within this total, inward and outward port cargo rose 4% and 5% to 78.4 million tonnes and 57.7 million tonnes.

On a seasonally adjusted quarter-to-quarter comparison, total port cargo throughput increased 10% in Q2. Within this total, inward and outward port cargo went up 11% and 8%.

Within port cargo, seaborne cargo increased 11% over a year earlier to 51.3 million tonnes, while river cargo also rose 5% to 22.1 million tonnes in Q2. Seaborne cargo increased 7% in the first half of 2011 over a year earlier to 94.5 million tonnes, while river cargo recorded virtually no change at 41.6 million tonnes.

In Q2, the port of Hong Kong handled 6.4 million container units, representing an increase of 7% over a year earlier. Within this total, laden containers increased 8% to 5.5 million units, while empty containers rose 2% to 0.9 million units.

In the first half of the year, the port of Hong Kong handled 11.9 million units of containers, representing an increase of 4% over the same period in 2010. Within this total, laden containers rose 4% to 10 million units, while empty containers increased 3% to 1.8 million units, according to a Census & Statistics Department report.

The number of ocean-vessel arrivals in Q2 rose 1% over a year earlier to 8,090, with the total capacity also increasing 6% to 104.4 million net registered tons. The number of river-vessel arrivals fell 1% over a year earlier to 43,880, with the total capacity increasing 5% to 28.3 million net registered tons.

In the first half of 2011, the number of ocean-vessel arrivals increased 1% over a year earlier to 16,120, with the total capacity also increasing 8% to 206.5 million net registered tons. The number of river-vessel arrivals fell 1% over a year earlier to 87,050, with the total capacity increasing 3% to 54.3 million net registered tons.
