Nearly half of Hong Kongers shop online in 2024, more than double 2014 levels, C&SD says
Mobile payments reached 60% adoption across the region.
Nearly half (49.6%) of Hong Kong residents shopped online in 2024, more than double 2014 levels (23.4%), according to the Census and Statistics Department.
Mobile payments were used by 60% of the population for online and in-store transactions, with adoption exceeding 90% amongst 25- to 44-year-olds.
Usage varied by age as 25- to 34-year-olds recorded the highest online shopping rate at 80%, whilst residents 65 and older reached 10% in 2024, up from 1% in 2014.
Mobile payment adoption in this elderly group rose to 20%, from 2% in 2017, the report said.
The department cited network technology and the growing use of smartphones and smartwatches as key drivers of these trends.
