
Hong Kong professionals turn to contracting as career goals shift
83% of professionals in Hong Kong see contracting as an industry with strong career growth opportunities.
A growing segment (7%) of professionals in Hong Kong are eager to explore contracting work, leading other Asian regions such as China (4%) and Thailand (3%).
In a report, Hays said career progression remains a top priority in 2025, more professionals are turning to contract roles for greater flexibility and earning potential.
Meanwhile, 83% of professionals in Hong Kong see contracting as an industry with strong career growth opportunities. Additionally, 17% are drawn by the potential for higher earnings, whilst 14% seek better work-life balance through flexible contract roles.
Despite uncertainties, hiring activity in Hong Kong is expected to remain stable. Around 46% of businesses plan to increase their workforce in 2025, as companies adjust their talent strategies to address skill shortages and rising turnover rates.
On the other hand, 57% of professionals in Hong Kong planning to switch jobs in 2025—more than double the 27% who made a change in 2024.
The top reasons for leaving include a lack of career growth opportunities (46%), salary concerns (40%), and job security worries (22%).
Most professionals also anticipate increments of 2.5% to 5% (30%), whilst 22% expect no salary change, and 17% foresee increases of up to 2.4%.
These align closely with employer projections, as 34% of hiring managers predict salary adjustments in the 2.5%-5% range, whilst 23% expect raises of up to 2.4%.
