Chief Executive appoints six new HKU Council members
The government established a task group to investigate the university's internal operations.
Chief Executive John Lee, Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), has appointed Peter Wong as HKU Council chairman for a three-year term, beginning on 1 January 2025.
Five new members have also been appointed to the council. Simon Li and Irons Sze will commence their three-year terms on 1 December 2024, whilst Rock Chen, Wilfred Wong, and Samuel Yung will start their terms on 1 January 2025.
These appointments come as the terms of six current members of the HKU Council are set to expire by the end of this year. The chief executive’s decision to fill these positions aims to bring fresh perspectives to the council.
In response, HKU stated that it respects these decisions and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing academia, talent cultivation, and international collaboration.
Additionally, the government established a task group in June, comprising the Permanent Secretary for Education and the Chairman of the University Grants Committee, to investigate HKU's internal operations and propose recommendations for improvements and best practices.
