Three universities submit proposals for HK's third medical school
A final recommendation is expected within the year.
Hong Kong Baptist University, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have submitted proposals to establish the city’s third medical school, the government announced on 17 March.
The proposals were received by the Task Group on New Medical School before the submission deadline. The Task Group had invited all University Grants Committee-funded institutions to apply in December last year, with a deadline of 17 March.
The Task Group will now assess the proposals based on 10 key parameters, including curriculum structure, financial sustainability, and strategic positioning. Expert advisors and task group members will conduct an in-depth evaluation, with interviews planned for the second quarter to further assess the submissions.
A final recommendation is expected within the year, aiming to enhance Hong Kong’s medical talent pipeline and support the city’s development as an international hub for medical training, research, and innovation.
The Task Group, established in October, consists of local, Mainland, and overseas academics, as well as representatives from the Medical Council of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, and various government departments.
