Task force drafts proposed elderly-friendly building designs
Mandatory requirements for caring will be regulated in the first half of 2026.
A Task Force Promoting Elderly-friendly Building Design has formulated proposals for implementation starting from the middle of the year, said the government on Tuesday.
The concept was first announced in the Chief Executive’s 2023 Policy Address. In November 2024, a series of proposals for building design was unveiled and consulted with stakeholders.
The implementation covers four categories: promoting spatial accessibility, enhancing elderly well-being, facilitating subsequent modifications, and the adoption of technology among the elderly.
The proposals are also applicable to various types of buildings, including residential buildings, composite buildings, commercial premises, shopping complexes, and clinics.
As for public housing developments and government buildings, the government will also endeavor to adhere to the proposals.
The Buildings Department made updates to practice notes for encouraged features, whilst mandatory requirements will be added to the Building (Planning) Regulations in the first half of 2026.
