HKIA opens new Terminal 2 for leisure travel
Fifteen airlines will begin moving check-in services to the new terminal from 27 May.
Hong Kong International Airport has opened its new Terminal 2, with departure facilities set to begin operations on 27 May 2026.
Fifteen airlines will start relocating their check-in services to the terminal once its departure facilities are commissioned.
Terminal 2 spans 300,000 square metres and is designed for both departing and arriving passengers. Arrival facilities are expected to begin operations next year, depending on traffic demand.
Airport Authority Hong Kong Chairman Fred Lam said the terminal is positioned for leisure travel, with its design focused on passenger comfort and efficiency through self-check-in, self-bag drop, and smoother immigration clearance.
The departures hall has eight check-in aisles, 68 express self-bag drop counters, 58 smart check-in kiosks, and 108 hybrid check-in counters.
The terminal also features 20 e-Security Gates with facial recognition technology. From 27 May, the minimum age for using facial recognition at e-Security Gates will be lowered from 11 to 7 in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Inside the restricted area, 15 smart security screening channels will allow passengers to keep laptops and bottled liquids under 100ml in their carry-on luggage during screening.
The Immigration Department has also set up 35 e-Channels and 60 counters for departing passengers.
The terminal includes large LED displays with 3D and ocean-themed content, a departures hall food court with eight catering outlets, and 12 shops offering travel necessities and souvenirs.
