CAD bans use of power banks during flights

Stowage of power banks in overhead compartments are also prohibited.

Hong Kong’s Civil Aviation Department (CAD) has tightened regulations on the use of powerbanks, including banning the use of power banks for charging other portable electronic devices during a flight.

Starting 7 April 2025, passengers of local airlines will also no longer be allowed to recharge power banks during a flight.

Stowage of power banks in overhead compartments is also prohibited.

CAD met with representatives from local airlines on 21 March, Friday, to update the requirements and regulations for local airlines on passengers carrying and using power banks.

In an announcement, the CAD expressed that it is “highly concerned” about recent safety incidents involving passengers carrying lithium battery power banks on aircraft.

Passengers are advised to check with relevant airlines on the latest regulations before their flight.
