Improved certification scheme helps SMEs to go green

Certification Scheme 2.0 expands access and support for small firms.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are taking center stage in Hong Kong’s green building push, as the Construction Industry Council (CIC) and the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC) launch Certification Scheme 2.0 to accelerate sustainable construction practices.

With over 1,000 certified green products to date, the majority have come from SMEs—especially those based in mainland China. The new scheme is designed to expand participation through clearer guidelines, broader categories, and targeted support.

“Most of the green products are produced by the SMEs,” said Ir Albert Cheng, Executive Director of CIC. “We’ve included training sessions to help them learn how to register and certify their products.”

One of the biggest changes in Version 2.0 is the introduction of a “general green product” category, which makes it easier for small manufacturers of materials not covered in earlier versions to apply for certification. “This enables us to embrace more kinds of materials that provide environmental benefits to the industry,” Cheng explained.

To support the certification process, CIC has engaged over 13 mainland-based auditors and certification bodies to help SMEs validate their products under the scheme. “Through this, we can place more SMEs in a position to contribute meaningfully to the market,” Cheng added.

Ar. Dr Tony Ip, Director and Convenor of the Green Product Task Force at HKGBC, emphasised the importance of SME inclusion. “We strongly encourage SMEs to participate,” he said. “Their involvement is vital to scaling up green transformation across the industry.”

According to Ip, the new scheme provides flexibility, clarity, and market visibility—giving small firms the opportunity to showcase sustainable products and align with the growing demand for low-carbon materials in the region.

“By joining this scheme, SMEs not only contribute to a greener Hong Kong,” Ip said, “but also position themselves for long-term success in a sustainability-driven market.”
