Hong Kong registered ships detention rate stands at 0.69%

Its gross tonnage ranks fourth in the world.

The results of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Member State Audit Program were released on Thursday, gross tonnage of ships registered in Hong Kong ranks fourth in the world, said the Transport and Logistics Bureau.

The audit was conducted from 4 to 13 November 2023, the results show the detention rate of Hong Kong registered ships was 0.69%, lower than the global average of 3.30%.

The report also praised Hong Kong's practice of requiring Hong Kong-flagged ships to complete pre-arrival inspection checklists and hold regular seminars, which helps it ensure compliance with the latest IMO regulations.

Meanwhile, the audit suggests Hong Kong to monitor more on communication of mandatory information by IMO and track the participation of government surveyors in training.
