WSD reports device loss with data from 495 households
The device was lost during meter-reading.
The Water Supplies Department (WSD) has confirmed that a personal digital assistant (PDA) containing consumer data was lost during field meter-reading operations conducted on 9 April.
The device contained the names and addresses of 495 domestic consumers from three buildings in Fortress Hill. The department said the information did not include Hong Kong identity card numbers or other sensitive personal data, except for one record that included a telephone number.
The WSD said it has notified the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data and the Digital Policy Office, and has also filed a police report, adding that it will cooperate with the relevant authorities in their investigations.
Affected consumers have been informed and advised to remain alert. The department has issued an apology for the incident and said it has provided a customer service hotline and email contact for enquiries.
The WSD said it takes the matter seriously and has reminded staff to follow data handling and confidentiality procedures when conducting field operations.
It added that an internal investigation is underway into the circumstances of the incident and the personnel involved, with disciplinary action to be considered based on findings.
The department said it will also review its field meter-reading equipment and procedures to strengthen data protection controls.
