Prudential HK launches AI Underwriter for faster preliminary review
Before AI Underwriter, it could take days for a preliminary review, the insurer said.
Prudential Hong Kong has fully launched AI Underwriter, an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered underwriting solution.
Developed alongside Alibaba Cloud, AI Underwriter provides preliminary underwriting guidance to all Prudential financial consultants within minutes, making use of a chatbot at the point of sale, the insurer said in a statement published on 9 September 2026.
The guidance will be based on information such as a customer’s financial, medical, occupational and residential profile. It can provide preliminary indications on acceptance, exclusion, loading or additional information required within minutes, Prudential Hong Kong said.
Before AI Underwriter, it could take days for a preliminary review to indicate what additional information may be required before an application proceeds, the insurer said.
Prudential Hong Kong said that AI Underwriter does not replace underwriters’ professional judgement or final underwriting decisions. Final underwriting decisions remain with Prudential’s underwriters.
AI enables Prudential to anticipate customer needs and act earlier, delivering greater transparency and better outcomes, said Lawrence Lam, CEO of Prudential Hong Kong.
AI Underwriter is introduced as the first phase of Prudential’s broader roadmap to enhance underwriting support through AI, it said.
In future phases, Prudential said that it plans to expand the service to other sales channels, including bancassurance and brokerage.
AI Underwriter exemplifies how full-stack AI—from cloud infrastructure to foundation models—can deliver tangible values in one of the most knowledge-intensive functions in the insurance sector, said Ethan Yuan, vice president of international business, regional general manager of APAC North, Alibaba Cloud Intelligence.
