Warhol’s art on sale at Sotheby’s Hong Kong

“From Warhol, With Love" is open until September 24.

Over 40 early works by the renowned American “pop artist” Andy Warhol are currently on exhibit and sale at Sotheby's Hong Kong Gallery.

The selling exhibition features lesser known works by Warhol made in the 1950s before he became famous as one of the leading lights of the “visual art movement,” more popularly called the pop art group.

Warhol traveled in Asia during the 1950s. Among Warhol’s works on display are a ballpoint pen sketch of a Hong Kong street scene and views of. The artist’s other iconic works include paintings of the late Chinese leader, Mao Zedong.

Sotheby's said the demand for Warhol’s art is increasing in Hong Kong, which now plays the role as an Asian center for showcasing international artists.

Earlier this year, the Hong Kong Museum of Art held a well-received exhibition of some of Warhol’s most famous works, including Marilyn Monroe and Mao. The museum said the exhibition drew over 200,000 visitors.

The highest price ever paid for a Warhol painting is US$100 million for a 1963 canvas, "Eight Elvises." Warhol's works include some of the most expensive paintings ever sold.
