Hong Kong has future as top IT center

Hong Kong could become Asia's leading information technology center because of its many competitive advantages, said international commercial real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield.

The company said Hong Kong leads the Asia Pacific region in terms of housing data centers for global IT giants. The city's nine submarine communication cable systems and 17 land cable systems seamlessly connect Hong Kong's advanced telecoms to the world, the report said.

Other Hong Kong advantages are its natural-hazard-free environment and stable power supply that guarantee the safety of data centers. In addition, the city's highly developed transportation networks enable a smooth ride between the data centers and the company's head offices that are generally located within 20 kilometers.

Hong Kong is also regarded as one of the most friendly business environments in the world, where information flows freely without any censorship regime. The city's 73,000 professionals and 2,300 IT graduates annually also guarantee sufficient talent supply in Hong Kong.

China Mobile and Google will both establish data centers in the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Area where the Hong Kong government has set aside over 10 hectares of land in the past two years to cater to data centers.
