Hong Kong awards contracts to build government “cloud”

Contracts worth US$16.3 million went to 44 companies.

The Hong Kong government has awarded 70 standing offer agreements (SOAs) for the provision of professional services for government IT projects.

The total value of the SOAs awarded is some US$128.9 million. The contracts began on July 31 and will last for 48 months.

Through its e-government program, the government uses IT for internal operation and public service delivery. The contracts were awarded under a scheme that reinforces the government’s IT outsourcing strategy by enlarging its delivery capacity for IT services.

It also provides excellent business opportunities for the IT sector and helps further the development of the local IT industry.

Cloud computing describes a variety of different types of computing concepts that involve a large number of computers that are connected through a real-time communication network, typically the Internet.
