Here’s the Q&A interview transcript with Nadine Levitt, a co-founder of Wurrly, a new music app launching this month.


Nadine Levitt is a Swiss born, German, Kiwi, US transplant, wine collector, mom of two toddlers and holds several patents in the fitness and technology sector.

A professional opera singer and songwriter who has performed extensively all over the United States, and the world, Nadine has shared the stage with David Foster, Roger Daltry, Christina Perri, and Steven Tyler to name but a few.

In 2013 she founded a label & publishing company (Feel Like A Giant & FLAG Publishing), and through those deals formed partnerships with TAP Management and Interscope Records.

The need for a platform such as Wurrly was born out of her personal need as a singer. “Not everyone can afford a pianist to accompany them, and location and economic differences should not be a barrier to entry for self expression.”Nadine also holds a Law and Arts Degree (Majoring in languages and translation) from Auckland University (New Zealand).

What is the app all about? What makes it unique/ promising?

What motivated you to develop such application?

It was born out of a personal need. I am a singer and last year I was asked to sing the song Crazy by Bon Jovi for a show I was doing. I went online looking for a backing track to rehearse and play around with and couldn't find ANYTHING that allowed me to take the original track and put it up 4 or 5 steps to where I needed it to be. I ended up having to hire my amazingly talented pianist to rehearse with me, which is an expensive way to go about learning a song! I said to him "Wouldn't it be nice if there was an app that allowed me to take a backing track and customize it to suit me rather than me customizing myself to suit the song?" As it happened, my pianist was developing a different app at the time and asked me if I wanted to join him at his meeting with developers later that day. I jumped at the chance, and the rest is history! Needless to say, my pianist is now my co-founder and Musical Director!

What problem is it trying to solve?

A song shouldn't be one size fits all! We are all individuals and Wurrly celebrates that! So we let you customize backing tracks to suit you rather than requiring you to change you to suit the song. The number one reason people think they can't sing is because it's in the wrong key. And with popularity of shows like American Idol and The Voice, it is clear that people like to see people making a song their own - providing their own perspective. This is how music can stay timeless. Wurrly makes it easy to make a song your own and share it.
