New language proficiency rules for English and Putonghua teachers

The new rules will take effect in SY 2024-2025.

English and Putonghua teachers in primary and secondary schools will face new language proficiency requirements starting the school year 2024-2025.

The government announced that the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic Module) and the Test of Proficiency in Putonghua conducted by the State Language Commission will replace written and speaking assessments on the Language Proficiency Assessment (LPA).

Meanwhile, the government will continue to conduct the Classroom Language Assessment (CLA) for teachers. Teachers who have passed the LPA and CLA assessments will continue to be recognised.
