Population inches up 0.1% in 2024
It was driven by a net inflow of 21,000 residents.
Hong Kong’s population reached an estimated 7,534,200 by the end of 2024, marking a 0.1% increase from the previous year, according to provisional figures released by the Census & Statistics Department .
The slight growth was primarily driven by a net inflow of 21,000 Hong Kong residents during the year, the department reported.
However, the city continued to experience a natural population decline, with 36,700 births recorded against 51,400 deaths, resulting in a net loss of 14,700 people.
Government officials noted that 2024 marked the third consecutive year of population growth, coinciding with the return to normalcy post-pandemic. They attributed the rise in residents to increased migration from the Mainland and other regions, facilitated by policies aimed at attracting talent and importing labor.
The number of usual residents rose 0.3% to 7,267,100, while mobile residents totaled 267,100.
