Manufacturing receipts climb to $300b in 2024
Gross surplus edged up by 1.3% as costs rise.
The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) reported that Hong Kong’s manufacturing sector recorded total receipts of $300.0b in 2024, up 23.3% year on year (YoY). On a per‑company basis, receipts averaged $47.3m, an increase of 25.4% from 2023.
Operating expenses and employee compensation rose 24.9% to $283.3b, resulting in a gross surplus of $16.7b, up 1.3%. Gross surplus accounted for 5.6% of total receipts, down 1.2 percentage points from 2023. Industry value added increased 1.7% to $37.6b.
Within manufacturing, the food, beverages and tobacco industry generated receipts of $47.0b and a gross surplus of $6.0b, equal to 12.7% of receipts. The metal products, machinery and equipment industry posted receipts of $199.1b with a surplus of $3.8b .
The chemicals, rubber, plastics and non‑metallic mineral products industry recorded receipts of $29.4b and surplus of $4.4b.
The paper products, printing and reproduction of the recorded media industry reported receipts of $10.5b and surplus of $1.2b.
The survey also covered energy supply and waste management. Electricity and gas supply receipts reached $78.5b, up 0.5%, with gross surplus rising 9.6% to $28.8b. Industry value added increased 12.3% to $38.0b. Sewerage, waste management and remediation activities recorded receipts of $6.4b, up 2.0%, with gross surplus at $0.8b.
