The bank integrated ESG loan tracking into its core front-end lending workflows to streamline regulatory compliance.

China CITIC Bank International Limited won Regtech - Banking in the Hong Kong Business Technology Excellence Awards 2026 for its ESG Product Report Enhancement initiative.

In alignment with global net-zero commitments and local green finance goals, financial institutions face growing requirements to digitise sustainable finance tracking. Prior to this deployment, front, middle, and back-office teams relied on manual email exchanges to record and transfer loan information, including loan types, margin adjustments, and balance updates. This manual approach created operational risks, potential reporting errors, and challenges in monitoring mandatory post-lending compliance deadlines.

To solve these operational challenges, China CITIC Bank International Limited integrated ESG indicators and tracking functions directly into relationship managers' existing IT workflows. During the initial application, users confirm ESG eligibility via a simple interface prompt, which then activates a dedicated feature tab. Relationship managers select from five distinct ESG loan types and enter key compliance milestones, logging timelines into the loan profile from inception.

This automated architecture captures data at the start of the loan lifecycle rather than relying on retrospective administrative updates. Capturing compliance information at creation ensures data remains locked in the central database across pre-lending categorisation and post-lending deadline monitoring.

Since deployment, the system has processed a significant volume of ESG loans, eliminating manual departmental communication and accelerating overall turnaround times. Real-time data access removed previous monthly verification bottlenecks, enabling faster end-of-month closing schedules. The platform achieved a zero-error rate across all system-identified ESG loans, improving data accuracy for internal risk controls and official regulatory reporting.

Future developments include modular enhancements such as direct document uploads within the dedicated tab for centralised storage and automated alerts for upcoming submission deadlines. These additions maintain platform adaptability for upcoming regulatory shifts.
