Hong Kong to open Fanling Bypass on 3 May
Route under Northern Metropolis cuts peak travel time.
Hong Kong will open the Fanling Bypass (Eastern Section) at 8 a.m. on 3 May, marking the first major transport infrastructure project completed under the Northern Metropolis programme.
The government said the 4 km bypass will support development of the Northern Metropolis, particularly the Fanling North New Development Area, whilst improving connectivity for nearby villages in the North District.
The dual two-lane carriageway starts at Fanling Highway near Kau Lung Hang in Tai Po, passes the On Lok Tsuen Industrial Area and Lung Yeuk Tau Interchange, runs along the Ng Tung River, and connects to Shek Wu San Tsuen and the Fanling North new development area.
Officials said the new route will allow motorists travelling between Fanling, Lung Yeuk Tau, Luen Wo Hui, and Fanling Highway to avoid the busy town centre roads of Sheung Shui and Fanling, cutting peak-hour journey times by about 10 minutes.
The government added that the bypass should also divert future traffic from the Fanling North development area and ease pressure on major roads in Fanling and Sheung Shui.
It also highlighted engineering features, including the use of S960 ultra-high-strength steel in a cycle track and pedestrian bridge, and Hong Kong’s first use of the horizontal bridge rotation method on a section spanning the East Rail Line.
