Elevating ‘air taxi’ thru helicopter services in Hong Kong, Guangdong sought
Point-to-point air transport will be promoted to high-end travellers.
With cross-boundary commercial helicopter services between Hong Kong and Guangdong areas, the government is pushing for point-to-point air travel for luxurious travellers and uplift international business in the bay area.
In response to lawmaker Chan Hok-fung at the Legislative Council meeting, Transport Secretary Frank Chan said they want to elevate cross-boundary air transport services between Hong Kong and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay areas with greater flexibility, which is similar to air taxis.
In Hong Kong, cross-boundary helicopters take off and land at Sky Shuttle Heliport in Sheung Wan, which has sufficient capacity.
This is also enough to meet market demand for cross-boundary helicopter services between Hong Kong and other places in the bay area in the coming years, added Chan.
Apart from this air taxi-like service, the Government Flying Service is also putting up its Kai Tak Division at the site annotated as a heliport at the tip of the former Kai Tak Airport runway.
Depending on the development of cross-boundary helicopter services and demand, Chan pointed out that operators may provide commercial helicopter services without sacrificing the operations of the department’s emergency services.
To further promote the commercial helicopter services, Chan said mainland helicopter operators have conducted trial flights in these areas since pre-pandemic times, which makes these transport services feasible.
