Hong Kong authorities probe CLP Power for voltage dip incident

CLP Power Hong Kong was requested to submit a report regarding the incident.

Authorities have began probing  the power supply incident that affected some areas in Kowloon and the New Territories on 6 April.

The Electrical & Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) has requested CLP Power Hong Kong to submit a detailed report within four weeks.

The Environment & Ecology Bureau has separately requested CLP Power to submit an explanation and implement improvements since this was not the first time such an incident happened this year.

Voltage dips and power interruptions were also reported in some areas in Hong Kong in January.

According to the notification sent by CLP Power to the department, the incident happened at around 1:29 PM. A brief voltage dip was recorded in the company’s 400-kilovolt power supply system in Tuen Mun, during which no interruption occurred.

As the voltage dip took place in a high-voltage system, a brief voltage dip resulted from the incident. Customers nearby may have experienced dimming or flickering in their lighting systems, while some electrical installations sensitive to voltage changes, such as lifts, may have suspended operations.

Initially, authorities suspected that the voltage dip was related to an equipment fault in Black Point Power Station.

Meanwhile, the EMSD was told to step up monitoring of CLP Power’s technical and electrical safety performance.
