Hong Kong explores Central Asia ties with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan

The government plans talks on logistics infrastructure and light industry development.

Hongs Kong will explore business cooperation and investment opportunities in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, with Chief Executive John Lee leading the delegation.

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) said economic reform and diversification in Central Asia create scope for bilateral collaboration.

Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan account for 59.7% and 13.2% of Hong Kong’s exports to Central Asia respectively.

Bruce Pang, Director of Research at HKTDC, said Central Asian governments plan to upgrade logistics infrastructure, including airports, air freight, and supply chains, adding that the region’s logistics firms can provide warehouse automation and supply chain management services.

Kazakhstan is also using Hong Kong’s financial system to develop fintech and digital asset activity.

Alice Tsang, Principal Economist at HKTDC, said Uzbekistan’s younger population supports a growing consumer market, adding that local enterprises view Hong Kong as a platform for fundraising and financing.

Tsang said Central Asian economies aim to expand light industries, whilst Hong Kong companies can work with Uzbek firms in manufacturing and product development.

She added that Uzbekistan is working to establish a “Made in Uzbekistan” brand and that firms in the region can support access to external markets.
