HKT to halt 2G services by November

2G service users accounted for only 0.36% of its mobile subscription base.

HKT will terminate the provision of 2G services on November 8 2024, in light of decreasing market demand.

To better utilise the spectrum resources, the portion currently deployed for the provision of 2G services, including spectrum in the 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz bands, will be reallocated for higher generations of mobile services to drive 5G and advanced network development.

The existing 2G services will operate as usual until the termination. 2G service users accounted for only 0.36% of its mobile subscription base as of April.

Meanwhile, 5G users increased by 12%, with penetration reaching 46% of its post-paid base.

HKT will continue to assist affected customers to upgrade their 2G mobile phone, whilst offering proper arrangements to those who do not intend to.
