China Telecom unveils direct-to-phone satellite connectivity in Hong Kong

It is powered by the Tiantong-1 satellite system.

China Telecom launched direct-to-phone satellite connectivity in Hong Kong on 8 May.

The service, powered by the Tiantong-1 satellite system, is under the theme "Mobile Always Online, Never Lost Contact."

It also marks Hong Kong as the first station to launch the internationalised overseas operation service of the Tiantong satellite.

Yang Lingcai, president of China Telecom Corporation Limited Satellite Communications Branch, highlighted the development of direct-to-phone satellite connectivity and introduced the "Tiantong-S+" products, designed to offer integrated satellite communication services for users in Hong Kong.

He also emphasised the group’s commitment to open cooperation and mutual development, using Hong Kong as a base to expand Tiantong's overseas operations in Macao, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and other Belt and Road countries.

Meanwhile, Chen Lidong, director of Emergency Communications Center and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the PRC, lauded China Telecom's role in implementing the 'Belt and Road' initiative and enhancing infrastructure connectivity, highlighting the potential benefits of direct-to-phone satellite connectivity for Hong Kong residents.
