Hong Kong criticises Panama court ruling on Hutchison ports
The ruling raises concerns over the legal treatment of Hong Kong companies operating in the country.
The Hong Kong SAR Government has criticised a Panamanian court ruling that found the renewal of Hutchison Ports Panama Ports Company’s contracts unconstitutional.
The contracts cover the operation of two ports in Panama. The government said the ruling raises concerns over the legal treatment of Hong Kong companies operating in the country.
It urged Hong Kong firms to reassess current and planned investments in Panama, citing increased uncertainty.
The government opposed the use of coercive or unreasonable measures in international trade, saying such actions harm the legitimate interests of Hong Kong businesses.
It added that the ruling could weaken investor confidence, damage Panama’s business environment, and strain bilateral economic relations.
The Hong Kong SAR Government called on Panama to honour contracts and provide a fair and predictable operating environment for companies investing legally in the country.
