Gov’t updates 'M' Mark system to boost sports events
Funding for approved events will range from $6m to $15m
The government has announced new changes to the “M” Mark system to improve the quality, appeal, and economic impact of major sports events.
Starting 16 September, all applications must be submitted at least six months before the event is held or announced.
Funding for approved events will range from $6m to $15m, depending on the vetting outcome, meaning not every approved application will receive the maximum allocation.
To encourage organisers to increase private sponsorship and develop sports as an industry, direct grants for new major sports events will follow a sliding scale: $6m in the first year, $5m in the second, and $4m in the third.
Vetting will weigh the event’s contribution to sports development, tourism, and the local economy, whilst selection will focus on world-class major sports events, with a maximum of three exhibition matches or tournaments funded per six-month cycle.
Organisers may receive up to 50% of matching funds before the event, but final funding can be adjusted if targets for athletes, spectators, marketing, tourism, or economic impact are not met.
Additionally, organisers are required to hire an independent agent to conduct exit surveys and report on the event’s effectiveness.
The government said these measures will ensure better-managed events, stronger spectator appeal, and greater economic benefits.
