30% of Hongkongers want new medical insurance in 2025
Four in five of Hong Kong residents already have medical insurance.
A fifth of Hong Kong respondents plan to increase their health budgets in 2025, with the figure rising to 26% amongst middle-income individuals.
Currently, 81% of Hong Kong residents have medical insurance, but personal coverage remains low. Only 15% rely solely on company-provided plans, whilst 19% are uninsured.
Looking ahead, 30% of Hongkongers plan to purchase new medical insurance in 2025, with a notable 48% of high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) expressing interest.
The primary reasons for acquiring new medical insurance include addressing coverage gaps (44%), rising medical expenses (36%), and reducing financial risks (36%).
However, high costs remain a barrier, with 62% of uninsured individuals citing expense as the main reason for not obtaining coverage.
MDRi CEO Simon Tye noted that Hong Kong presents a strong growth opportunity for insurers, particularly amongst HNWIs and those without coverage.
He emphasised that positioning medical insurance as an affordable safeguard against rising healthcare costs could drive further adoption.
