Gov't forms task group to set up new medical school

It will handle tasks like funding arrangements and programme accreditation.

The government has formed a task group to establish a new medical school aimed at boosting talent in the medical field and enhancing its status as a global hub for medical training, research, and innovation.

The group, co-chaired by Education Secretary Choi Yuk-lin and Health Secretary Lo Chung-mau, will invite proposals from local universities later this year, with the goal of selecting an institution to build the new school.

Key factors under consideration include the new school's strategic direction, curriculum design, student recruitment, and the necessary resources for teaching and training. The group's final recommendations will be presented to the Chief Executive in Council for approval.

The group will handle tasks like funding arrangements, programme accreditation, teaching hospital support, and research facilities. It will also liaise with the selected university to manage the implementation plan, ensuring interim and long-term arrangements for the school's campus and associated facilities.

Lo said the government has invited local, Mainland, and international experts in medical education and university management, alongside representatives from relevant government bureaus and departments to form the task group.
