Almost 90% of Hong Kongers want remote work

But only 45% have the option for remote working. 

Almost 90% of Hong Kongers prefer to work remotely either most of the time or entirely, a report found. 

In its Hopes & Fears 2022 report, the PwC found that only 45% of the Hong Kong workforce has the option to work away from the office. This is lower than the 54% global average. 

“The willingness to work remotely or in hybrid format is on an upward trajectory in Hong Kong, employers are advised to uphold workplace flexibility and experiment with different modes of working,” Michael Cheng, People & Organisation Advisory Digital Lead Partner of PwC Hong Kong, said. 

“Employers can continue to seek new ways of improving hybrid working experiences by providing employees with more digitalised tools and training, and take a more holistic approach to address retention risks such as pay and career development for those who cannot work remotely or in a hybrid format.”

Moreover, Hong Kong workers were found to show a slightly less demand for professional skill training and less of a skills shortage (62%), compared to the global average of 69%. 

It added that Hong Kong employers take more initiative in addressing talent shortage concerns than their global counterparts. 

Employers in the city, in particular, resolve issues of shortage through salary increases (57%) and upskilling (48%).
