Ocean Park hotel set for October launch as part of tourism drive

A water park will also be completed by the end of the year.

Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriott will be ready for launch by October as the loss-making theme park works double time to revamp itself into an international resort destination, reports South China Morning Post.

The opening of the $5b hotel has been deferred as Lai Sun Development told SCMP that it had to pass through several levels of tests and procedures to receive clearance.

Construction activity for the 471-room hotel was expected to have finished by last year.

Another attraction, a $2.9b water park called the Tai Shue Wan Water World, is also set to be completed by the end of the year. The goal is to lure over 1 million tourists in its first year of operation.

The government earlier pledged to allocate $310m to boost the theme park in developing education and tourism projects as part of its concerted tourism drive.

Hong Kong is also allocating an additional $396m for the tourism industry to implement the Development Blueprint released last year, Finance Secretary Paul Chan said in his budget address.
