Hong Kong drops to seventh place in APAC's most visited cities in 2017

There were 9.03 million international overnight visitors.

Hong Kong fell down one notch to seventh spot in the ten most visited cities in Asia Pacific in 2017, according to the Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index 2018.

The city bore witness to 9.03 million international overnight visitors in 2017, enabling the SAR to nab 14th place in the global rankings. 

“Despite dropping a notch from ranking the sixth the previous year, the city saw a slight increase in international overnight visitors from 2016 which saw 8.86 million visitors,” Mastercard said in a statement.

With overnight visitor arrivals poised to grow by 0.9% in 2018, the economy is poised to receive a boost from the tourist influx as spending by international overnight visitors is similarly projected to increase by 3.78% from US$5.92b in 2017. 

Bangkok holds the title as the most visited city on a global and regional scale with 20.05 million international visitors. London came it at a close second at 19.83 million whilst Paris and Dubai had 17.44 million and 15.79 million visitors each. Singapore rounds out the global top five with 13.91 million visitors in 2017.
