Total receipts up 4.5% to $23.1b

Only a slight increase from Chinese restaurants.

In a report, the Census & Statistics Department said the value of total receipts of the restaurants sector in the second quarter, provisionally estimated at $23.1 billion, rose 4.5% year-on-year.

The provisional value of total purchases by restaurants grew 1.3% to $7.9 billion.

After netting out the effect of price changes over the same period, the volume of total restaurant receipts increased 0.2% year-on-year.

Analysed by type of restaurant, total receipts of Chinese restaurants increased 1.4% in value but decreased 2.6% in volume. Total receipts of non-Chinese restaurants rose 8.8% in value and 4.5% in volume, while total receipts of fast food shops grew 4.7% in value and 0.2% in volume.

Total receipts of miscellaneous eating and drinking places increased 10.9% in value and 4.6% in volume. Total receipts for bars dropped 1.3% in value and 4.8% in volume.

Comparing the first half of 2013 with the same period in 2012, total restaurant receipts increased 4.1% in value but decreased 0.3% in volume.
