Unemployment unchanged at 3.7% in April-June

Underemployment edged up 1.6% across the period.

Hong Kong’s unemployment rate remained at 3.7% in April-June 2026, according to provisional data released by the Census and Statistics Department.

Underemployment rate edged up to 1.6% in the same period from 1.5% in the previous three-month period.

The number of underemployed people increased by around 5,600 to 62,400 during the period, whilst the number of unemployed people fell by around 1,400 to 139,700.

Total employment increased by around 6,800 to 3.65 million from 3.639 million in March-Ma, whilst labour force also grew by around 5,500 to 3.79 million.

The underemployment rate increased in the warehousing and support activities for transportation sector, construction sector, and professional and business services sector, excluding cleaning and similar activities.

The unemployment rate fell in the import and export trade, food and beverage service activities, and real estate sectors, whilst it rose in the manufacturing sector and warehousing and support activities for transportation sector.

Chris Sun, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, said the ongoing economic expansion should continue to support the overall labour market, whilst the entry of fresh graduates and school leavers during the summer may have some impact.

“The Government is also closely monitoring the potential implications of the external uncertainties on corporate hiring sentiment,” Sun added.
