Retail sales climb 5.9% in September

Online sales were up 27.3% as recovery continues.

Hong Kong’s retail sales rose 5.9% year on year in September to $31.3b, provisional data from the Census & Statistics Department showed.

After accounting for inflation, retail volume increased 4.8%. Online sales grew 27.3% from a year earlier to $3.9b, representing 12.5% of total retail sales.

Sales of electrical goods and other consumer durables jumped 31.3%, whilst jewellery, watches and valuable gifts rose 9.1%. In contrast, apparel sales declined 5.4%, and furniture and fixtures fell 17.3%.

The Government said retail momentum remained firm in September, supported by improving local sentiment and steady inbound tourism.
