Hong Kong population edges up 0.9% to 7.17m

91,600 babies were born.

According to the Census & Statistics Department, the provisional estimate of the Hong Kong population at the end of 2012 was 7,173,900, up 0.9% on the previous year.

There were 43,100 deaths, 91,600 births, and a net movement of 13,000 Hong Kong residents.

Births and the inflow of One-way Permit holders made up most of the overall population increase.

The ratio of the number of births (those born to Hong Kong residents and non- residents) to the overall population increase was 149%. As for the inflow of One-way Permit holders, the ratio of the number, at 54,600, to the overall population increase was 89%.

Deaths during the period offset part of the increase. The ratio of the number of deaths to the overall population increase was 70%. If One-way Permit holders are excluded, there is a net outflow of 41,600 people, a ratio of 67% to the overall population increase.

The population is measured on the definition of resident population, which comprises usual and mobile residents. Among the total population at the end of 2012, there were 6,954,600 usual residents and 219,300 mobile residents.

The revised figure for the 2012 mid-year population was 7,154,600. The number of usual residents was revised to 6,938,800 and the number of mobile residents, 215,800. The population growth rate from mid-2011 to mid-2012 was also revised to 1.2%.
