Hong Kong population at 7.5 million in mid-2024

It recorded 34,400 births and 52,400 deaths between mid-2023 and mid-2024.

Hong Kong's population stood at 7,531,800 in mid-2024, a 0.1% decrease from mid-2023 but a 0.1% increase from the end of 2023, according to the Census & Statistics Department.

Between mid-2023 and mid-2024, the city recorded 34,400 births and 52,400 deaths. During the same period, a net inflow of 13,800 Hong Kong residents was observed. This influx included 44,000 one-way permit holders, offset by a net outflow of 30,200 other residents.

The Hong Kong Government attributed the population dynamics to a significant inflow of people from Mainland China and other regions over the past six months. This trend aligns with various initiatives aimed at attracting talent and importing labor.

The government also noted that following the full resumption of normal travel in early 2023, many Hong Kong residents living abroad returned to the city for short stays. This led to a noticeable population increase in mid-2023 compared to the previous year. However, as travel patterns normalised later in 2023, the population saw a slight decline by the end of 2023 and mid-2024.

As of mid-2024, Hong Kong's population comprised 7,287,400 usual residents and 244,400 mobile residents.
