Hong Kong launches 1st gas-powered food waste processing machine

It will reduce food waste by over 90%.

Hong Kong will be using its first gas-powered waste food processing machine in a bid to be more environmentally friendly in decomposing food and is expected to reduce food waste by over 90%.

In a statement, Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) said it partnered with EASi Solutions Global Technology to develop the processing machine.

The machine transforms waste into substances such as carbon dioxide and water. The decomposed food waste can also be used as a fertiliser.

With the reduction of food waste, it will also lead to savings in transportation and processing costs.

“The implementation of municipal solid waste charging aims to reduce the amount of waste, and therefore, handling food waste is closely intertwined with this goal,” said Don Cheng Hill-kwong, Towngas Head of Commercial – Hong Kong Utility and Head of Sustainable Green Energy Hub.

“Through this cooperation, we aspire to provide a straightforward and cost-effective waste reduction solution to the industrial, commercial, and residential sectors, effectively tackling the issue of food waste disposal, which constitutes one-third of the waste generated,” he added.

The machine can be installed in different settings such as buildings, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, communities, and housing estates, amongst others.
