Gross national income outpaces GDP by 14.7% in Q2
The growth was attributed to investment income inflows.
Hong Kong's Gross National Income (GNI) outpaced GDP by $123.7b, or 14.7%, driven by net inflow of investment income in the second quarter of 2026, according to preliminary figures released by the Census and Statistics Department on 14 September.
GNI rose 7.9% year-on-year (YoY) to $966.1b, whilst GDP rose 6.9% to $842.4b at current market prices.
After adjusting for price changes, GNI increased 5.3% in real terms, whilst real GDP grew 4.3%.
Total primary income inflow rose 6.4% YoY to $664.6b, equivalent to 78.9% of GDP. Primary income outflow increased 4.5% to $540.9b, or 64.2% of GDP.
Direct investment income inflow climbed 9.5%, mainly due to higher earnings by major companies from their investments overseas.
Portfolio investment income increased 4.8%, attributable to higher interest income from non-resident debt securities held by local investors.
The Chinese mainland remained the largest source of Hong Kong's primary income inflows, accounting for 40.6% of the total.
