CLP Power and VTC recognised for empowering Hong Kong’s sustainable Future with data-driven energy solutions

CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) and the Vocational Training Council (VTC) have jointly received the Big Data - Energy category at the Hong Kong Business Technology Excellence Awards 2026 for their collaborative project, Smart Energy Online - Data Driven Intelligence for Greener Campuses. The award recognises how the two organisations combined digital innovation, operational expertise and talent development to enhance energy management across VTC campuses and support Hong Kong's sustainability ambitions.

Smart Energy Online is CLP Power’s digital energy management platform that transforms electricity consumption data into actionable insights through advanced analytics and visualisation tools. Available to business customers with interval meter data, the platform enables users to monitor energy consumption, identify inefficiencies, benchmark performance, and support data-driven operational decisions. By helping organisations improve energy efficiency and optimise electricity use, Smart Energy Online contributes to reducing operating costs and sustainability performance.

As one of Hong Kong's largest vocational and professional education providers, the VTC has been actively advancing sustainable campus operations and integrating sustainability into learning and facilities management. Working closely with CLP Power, the VTC adopted the Smart Energy Online platform across eight major campuses to strengthen energy performance monitoring, generate actionable insights from electricity consumption data and support more informed operational decisions.

Energy demand varies significantly across the VTC’s classrooms, workshops, laboratories, and student facilities. To better manage this diverse operating environment, the VTC worked with CLP Power to deploy Smart Energy Online, enabling campus management teams to gain a consolidated view of electricity consumption across multiple sites and make more informed operational decisions based on regularly updated energy data. 

Smart Energy Online transformed electricity consumption data into actionable insights through advanced analytics and visualisation tools. Leveraging the platform’s capabilities, VTC facilities management teams were able to monitor energy consumption patterns, identify inefficiencies, benchmark campus performance and evaluate the impact of energy-saving initiatives. The platform replaced a traditionally fragmented process that relied on manual meter readings and retrospective reviews of electricity bills with a more centralised and data-driven energy management approach.

Through the platform’s analytics functions, VTC teams could identify unusual load profiles and electricity consumption outside expected operating periods. Automated notifications enabled  VTC’s campus management teams to respond more quickly to irregularities and investigate potential causes. Campus-level data also provided valuable insights into how equipment schedules and operational practices influenced electricity use during teaching hours and periods of lower campus activity.

The benchmarking and comparison functions gave the VTC a consistent framework for reviewing different energy consumption patterns between campuses without compiling separate reports. Teams could identify best practices, understand operational factors contributing to stronger performance and implement improvements where appropriate. Overall energy savings and performance improvements could also be tracked directly through the platform, supporting VTC’s sustainability objectives and helping to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Reporting and performance reviews also became more efficient, as standardised consumption records reduced the need for manual consolidation. This enabled VTC’s technical and facilities management teams to focus more on analysing energy performance, identifying corrective actions, and assessing the effectiveness of operational adjustments and equipment optimisation measures.

A distinctive feature of the project was the integration of industry collaboration with student learning. Drawing on Smart Energy Online data and operational insights from VTC campuses, VTC students participated in energy audit activities that combined classroom learning with real-world applications. The practical energy audit training delivered by CLP Power equipped the students with knowledge and skills in energy management and sustainability. Students subsequently conducted energy audits across VTC premises, assessing actual consumption patterns, identifying potential inefficiencies, and proposing recommendations to improve energy performance. 

Through the combination of platform data, site inspections and technical analysis, the exercise provided students with practical exposure to real-world energy management whilst supporting VTC’s ongoing efforts to enhance operational efficiency across its campuses.

Beyond operational benefits, the collaboration also demonstrated the strong synergy between industry and talent development. Over the past two years, CLP Power and the VTC have collaborated to provide VTC students with hands-on learning opportunities in energy auditing and sustainability practices. By applying classroom knowledge in a live campus environment, students gained valuable experience in data collection, analysis and the development of energy efficiency recommendations, helping nurture future talent to support Hong Kong’s sustainable development and low-carbon transition.

The award-winning project reflects the long-standing partnership between CLP Power and the VTC in advancing sustainability, innovation and talent development. In 2025, CLP Power and the VTC further strengthened their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering sustainability initiatives, energy innovation, and talent development.

Looking ahead, CLP Power and the VTC will continue exploring opportunities to expand the use of data-driven energy management solutions, including advanced analytics, predictive demand management, and carbon performance monitoring. 

Building on the success of the project, both organisations remain committed to supporting Hong Kong’s low-carbon transition whilst cultivating future talent for the energy sector.
