CLP Power and Alibaba Cloud recognised for advancing FinOps maturity

The collaboration won an accolade in the Cloud - Energy category.

CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power), in strategic partnership with Alibaba Cloud, has been awarded in the Cloud - Energy category at the Hong Kong Business Technology Excellence Awards 2025. The award acknowledges their joint efforts in progressing a comprehensive FinOps initiative aimed at enabling cost optimisation and strengthening financial governance across CLP Power’s cloud operations.

The initiative, undertaken within the Alibaba Cloud environment, has enabled CLP Power to enhance management of cloud costs and embrace the financial aspects of cloud operations.

Whilst FinOps continues to gain global attention, its adoption in the Asia Pacific region remains at a relatively early stage. CLP Power recognised early the need for robust financial governance in the cloud and is amongst the pioneering organisations leading the change in embedding FinOps practices into cloud operations. Notably, over 85% of CLP Power’s FinOps team is certified as FinOps practitioners, demonstrating their commitment to excellence in this field.

The initiative has integrated cloud consumption data on Alibaba Cloud into its FinOps tool to establish a clear, data-driven framework to track, manage, and optimise cloud spending. This wasn’t just a technical deployment — it brought together internal resources under a shared FinOps mission, fostering cross-functional collaboration and shared accountability for cloud financial management.

“Rather than simply deploying a cost management tool, we integrated FinOps principles into a broader operational framework. This approach, including right-sizing, subscription optimisation, custom dashboards for cost monitoring, has enabled us to elevate the financial governance of cloud operations, ensuring more effective resource allocation, enhanced forecasting, and greater organisational agility,” said CLP Power Head Of Service Excellence Mr Narayanan Sathappan. The initiative has delivered sustainable value and set a new benchmark for cloud financial management across the industry.

“Alibaba Cloud is committed to advancing the global FinOps community. We collaborate with customers to develop strategic roadmaps aligned with their long-term business and financial objectives,” said Head of Solutions Architect Alibaba Cloud Intelligence Hong Kong Mr Thomas Poon.
