HKIA passenger traffic soars for sixth straight month at 6.7 million in July

Local resident travel boosted monthly air passenger volumes.

Passenger traffic at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) booked the sixth consecutive month of expansion in 2018 after the number of passengers rose by 2.2% YoY to 6.7 million in July, according to a media statement. 

The month’s positive passenger traffic figures were boosted by Hong Kong resident travel which rose 8% YoY along with steady influx of passengers to and from the Mainland, Europe and Japan.

Other air metrics registered a similarly positive performance with flight movements inching up 1.1% to 36,685 in July.

Cargo and airmail throughput remained steady in July at 433,000 tonnes amidst a steady increase in transshipments (9% YoY). Traffic to and from North America and Southeast Asia registered the most significant growth in cargo throughput.

HKIA has also added EgyptAir to its air network which offers twice-weekly flights to and from Cairo via Bangkok effective September 18.

“The service will be further increased to three times per week from 28 October. We hope passengers enjoy the new service to this historic country, and we look forward to welcoming more new airlines adding even more destinations in the future,” Michael Yuen, general manager, airport and industry collaboration, Airport Authority Hong Kong said in a statement.
