HKIA sets single day record

Says record due to an 18% increase in resident passenger traffic.

Hong Kong International Airport said this increase in March 29 from February set a new single-day record of 200,000 passengers and 1,172 movements.

Passenger numbers for March rose to 5.0 million, an 8.0% increase year-on-year. From January to March, passenger numbers improved 5.2% t0 14.3 million.

Passenger traffic to and from South East Asia and mainland China outperformed other key regions.

Cargo volumes, however, fell due mainly to a sharp 7% drop in exports. Imports recorded a slight decline while transshipments saw a 7% increase.

Cargo volumes in March stood at 360,000 tonnes, down 2.2%\ from February. Cargo volume for the first quarter, however, rose 1.3% to 942,000 tonnes.

The Airport Authority said the current high level of daily scheduled flights is inevitably going to pose challenges, particularly in respect of parking stands,
