MTR to shoulder the $.10 per passenger upgrade costs

Will allocate internal resources to absorb construction costs.

The MTR will withdraw a 10-cent passenger contribution from December 1, which had been added to fares using Octopus cards on six MTR lines for retrofitting platform screen doors and automatic platform gates.

The Government welcomed the company’s announcement today, and noted the operator has decided not to impose additional fare hikes to cover retrofitting platform gates on the East Rail Line and Ma On Shan Line.

The company has agreed to allocate internal resources to absorb the East Rail Line construction costs. For the Ma On Shan Line, the Shatin to Central Link's overall works will bear half the cost, while the MTR will bear the rest.
